Occupational asthma is an allergic reaction that occurs in people when they have been exposed to particular substances in the workplace. These substances, called ‘respiratory sensitisers’ or asthmagens, can cause a change in people’s airways, known as the ‘hypersensitive state’.

Irritant-induced occupational asthma is different, as a non-allergic type of asthma which happens when you breathe in a chemical at your workplace, it causes irritation of your airways resulting in asthma symptoms. Irritant-induced asthma usually happens when there is an accidental chemical spillage in the workplace.
