What is MSD?

The term MSD denotes any injury damage or disorder of the joints or other tissues in the upper/lower limbs or back.


What causes MSD?

MSD can be caused or made worse by work and may be temporary or permanent. It can cause significant pain and impair normal activity.


MSD occurs across a wide range of industries as a result of poor working practices such as repetitive work, carrying out tasks for long periods without suitable rest breaks, using hold power tools regularly.


What are the common MSD’s?

Repetitive Strain Injury – a condition in which the prolonged performance of repetitive actions, typically with the hands, causes pain or impairment of function in the tendons and muscles involved.


Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome | Vibration White Finger (HAVS) – causes changes in sensory perception which can lead to permanent numbness of fingers, muscle weakness and, in some cases, bouts of white finger. It is caused by working with vibrating tools.


Osteoarthritis – is a disease of the entire joint involving the cartilage, joint lining, ligaments, and underlying bone. The breakdown of these tissues eventually leads to pain and joint stiffness. The most commonly affected joints are the knees, hips, and those in the hands and spine. It can be the result of joint damage from an injury or the repair that occurs after the injury.


Carpel Tunnel Syndrome – a painful condition of the hand and fingers caused by major nerve compression where it passes over the carpal bones through a passage at the front of the wrist. It may be caused by continual repetitive movements.


What type of work can cause MSD?

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are associated with these factors:

  • Work postures and movements.
  • Repetitiveness and pace of work.
  • Force of movements.
  • Vibration.
  • Temperature.
  • Increase pressure (e.g., to produce more).
  • Monotonous tasks.


Certain workplace conditions, for example, the speed of work (especially in conveyor-driven jobs), the layout of the workstation or the weight of the objects being handled influence these factors.


What rights do you have as an employee?

Your employer has general duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations to manage and control the risks associated with MSD. If your employer has failed in its duties, you will be able to bring a claim for compensation for the injuries which you have suffered.
